CINDERELLA
Petersfield’s Proper Panto
Fun galore for all the family in Winton Players’ 2012 production of CINDERELLA.
Written by new playwright Ben Crocker, CINDERELLA tells the classic tale of Cinder’s journey from ‘rags to riches’ with all the usual panto mix of humour, slapstick and pathos, and a sprinkling of ‘magic’ that brings it to life.
‘Cinders’ lives with her father, Baron Hardup, and her one true friend, a faithful servant called Buttons, in Hardup Hall. And it wouldn’t be panto without Cinder’s two mean, ugly stepsisters, Cheryl and Beryl, who make her do all the housework. True to his name, the Baron is always hard up and when his money making schemes involve investing in a racehorse, ( a loveable creature called “Dumpling”), at the same time as his two atrocious daughters are expelled from school whilst chasing any man, including the Prince, well…Hardup Hall will never be the same again!
As in the time-old story, Ben’s version has Prince Charming holding a ball to try and find himself a bride by inviting all the young ladies of the land…? Does Cinderella get an invitation to the ball and will her jealous stepsisters let her go??? Luckily Cinderella has a Fairy Godmother who keeps an eye on all the goings-on and makes sure we have the well-loved happy ending. Ben’s script has a modern touch and combined with funny gags, lively music, magical “twists” etc, he manages to retain some old fashioned humour with plenty to keep the audience and cast alike happy.
