Diary Dates

Cinderella 10th to 18th January

December

The countdown to Panto is running.  Why not buy some tickets as Xmas presents?

September

CINDERELLA needs YOU!
We shall be starting rehearsals for our next pantomime very soon , and there are a couple of important areas where we still need support.
We need someone - or preferably a small team - to take on the responsibility for PROPS. This would involve gathering the props, making them available for rehearsals, as necessary, and managing them during the performances. A small team would spread the load and the need to attend every rehearsal.
The other support needed is PROMPT. This would not be required until we are running each Act or the whole show - probably- early December.
If you are willing to give this support can you please let me or John Edwards know. I can give you more information and provide the props list if you wanted to look at this before deciding.

Winton Players are now a CIO, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.  The structure, in effect, allows charities to enter into contracts as corporate entities with limited liability for trustees and members. Charities that take up CIO status do not need to register with Companies House or be subject to company law, but are registered with and regulated by the Charity Commission.
I am delighted to inform you of the cast for our 2020 pantomime "Cinderella".
It is particularly pleasing to see how many will be in the chorus this year. Whenever I go to either pantomime or a musical, it is the colour, hearty singing and dancing of the chorus that are the most memorable moments. Good to see we have the opportunity of creating such magical moments.
If I have made any mistakes I apologise; please do not hesitate to contact me with corrections.
Best wishes - John Edwards Assistant Director

HELLO EVERYONE – IT’S PANTO TIME (well nearly!)
January 2020 may seem a fair way away but preparations for our next pantomime, CINDERELLA, started many months ago.
It is now time for it to be shared with all those who are interested in being a part of what we hope will be a special experience of probably the most popular of all pantomimes.

This date has been announced before, but to remind you that we will be holding a read-through next WEDNESDAY JUNE 12th at the Hut starting at 7.30.

As well as reading the script ,there will be copies of the words of all the songs and also the audition pieces. All of these will be in hard copy for you to take away.

Cinderella hardly needs any introduction, but is a great panto with a wide range of songs, much comedy and spectacle and some interesting new characters introduced for the first time. And, of course, a lovable panto horse!

For your diaries, the key dates before the summer are as follows.
WED 12 JUNE - READ THROUGH. The Hut at 7.30
WED 19 JUNE - GO THROUGH MUSIC ( incl music audition pieces). The Hut at 7.30
WED 3 JULY - 1st AUDITIONS FOR PRINCIPAL PARTS. The Hut at 7.30.
MON 8 JULY - 2nd AUDITIONS FOR PRINCIPAL PARTS. The Hut. 7.30
FRI 12 JULY - JUNIOR AUDITIONS . The Hut at 6.00
- CHORUS AUDITIONS. The Hut at 7.30

Working with me as Director I am delighted to have John Edwards as Assistant Director, Tony Blackford as Musical Director and Sarah Whitaker as Head Chaperone.

I hope as many of you as possible will come along next week to hear what it is all about and see how you can be involved.
Looking forward to seeing you.
With best wishes.

Roger

It is with great pride that we are able to announce that Junior Member of Winton Players, Nikolai Gibbins, has been awarded the prestigious Daniel Day Lewis Award 2018-2019 at the Petersfield Town Council's Annual Town Meeting.

The Committee nominated Nikolai for all his hard work over the years in all the productions he has taken part in and also for his kindness and mentoring to the other Juniors who have joined us.  He is an inspiration to them all, they look up to him and we are all very proud to have him as a member of Winton Players.

Nikolai and his parents attended the meeting last night, with representatives of Winton Players Committee and Sarah Whitaker and we are all so pleased that he won in the face of some stiff opposition from other young people.

Nikolai sent a message to us all:

"Thank you to everyone at Winton Players who has supported me all these years and for all your kind comments.  I've had so much fun in many different plays and pantos. There are too many people to mention individually but I really appreciate the support of you all and look forward to playing Pied Pipe in the upcoming One Acts. I still can't quite believe I've won this award".

Many congratulations to Nikolai :-)

All members of Green A, Lion & Unicorn Players, Petersfield Theatre Group and Winton Players are warmly invited.
The Lighting section will help actors understand how performance lighting is used and help them to work with it to show their performance at their best.

We will have some material available to speak and sing but please feel free to bring words or songs (with music) of your own if you would like.
There will be a short break for refreshments (donations invited).

After two years as understudying the master that was Roger Wettone, I’ve now moved up the bill to take on the principal role. My thanks go to Roger for his superb tenure as Chairman – he is a hard act to follow! We also welcome John Edwards, Mark Spiller and Jane Blower to the committee for the first time and are delighted to have Lyn Pease back on board. Copies were available at that meeting; there are copies available in The Hut; and a copy is attached below  for your consideration. A copy has been circulated to all members.

The Constitution is substantially the Charity Commission’s model CIO Constitution with selected options and minor amendments made to adapt the model to WP’s circumstances. Members are asked to consider the document and send any questions or comments to me by the 16 June 2018. The Constitution will be before the AGM/GM for formal approval before being submitted to the Charity Commission.

It has been WP’s policy to set the annual membership subscription at a level sufficient to meet the running costs of The Hut and its insurance. To date the cost of rates, gas, electricity, water & drainage, insurance, NODA subscription and safety inspections total £3,291. The total of subscriptions received was £2,320. Gift aid has been claimed on some subscriptions and is awaited but based on the current membership, the total subscription income will not meet next year’s costs. An increase in next year’s subscription was needed to meet the shortfall and it might be necessary for a further increase in the following year if the reserves, that WP needed to maintain, reduced further. It was recommended that the annual membership subscription for the year 2018-19, due at the start of the new membership year, June 1st , be increased to Full Members - £35 and Student/Junior Members - £7.50. On being put to the meeting this was agreed unanimously.

ONE ACTS
This year there will be one junior production (directed by Emily) and two adult productions
Fairy Tale Court Room by Dana Proulx
Directed by Emily Watts
28 roles (doubling up required)
“The Big Bad Wolf and the Wicked Witch have been causing mischief, stopping the other fairy tale creatures from having their happily ever afters. But now they have been caught and are being brought to justice. Through their own accounts and some flashbacks, fairy tale favourites such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and the Three Little Pigs will tell the jury (the audience!) what really happened.
The audience, as the jury, will be asked to give a verdict – so each trial has two endings depending on the outcome!”
For a script or any further information please contact Emily Watts on emilywatts516@gmail.com

The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard
3 – 6f, 2 – 5m (note that the gender of some characters are interchangeable so this will depend on who comes to audition)
“Moon and Birdboot, two drama critics, arrive to watch the performance of a new detective play, a parody of the conventional stage thriller. However the private lives of the critics become inextricably mixed with those of the play’s characters until Moon is shot dead and the real Inspector Hound proves to be…?”
For a script or any further information please contact Ryan Watts on rwatts2312@gmail.com
A Phoenix Too Frequent by Christopher Fry
Directed by Brenda Adams
2f, 1m
“Tegeus, a handsome young officer in the Roman army, leaves his post--where he is guarding the dead bodies of criminals to prevent their families from burying them--to investigate the voices he hears coming from a nearby mausoleum. The voices are those of two women--the lady Dynamene and her servant Doto, who have entombed themselves with the corpse of Dynamene's husband Virilius, an imperial bureaucrat. The women are starving themselves to death so they may accompany Virilius across the River Styx to the land of the dead”
For a script or further information please contact Brenda Adams on 01730 263 859
Performances are 14th and 15th July.

Auditions for the adult one-acts will be on Monday 7th May at 7.30pm. For those interested in the junior production they should have already had an email from Sarah W but to make sure we catch everyone, auditions will be next Friday 4th May from 6pm – 8pm.

Here is the agenda for our General Meeting on 9th May - 7:30pm at the Hut.

Attached is the document previously circulated showing a synopsis and character descriptions which now has the audition pieces added.
I still have a few copies of the script which I can lend out and I will be putting copies of all the audition pieces on Facebook in the next few days.
I hope we have a strong turnout for the auditions for this exceptional play. If you have any queries please let me know. Roger.

The buds have blossomed and we now turn our attention to one acts and Birdsong, but first as you may know, WP’s charitable objects include donations to for charitable purposes and our practice has been to decide such donations at our AGM. However, a WP member had an opportunity to book the Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir, which is in great demand, and proposed a concert to raise funds for the Rosemary Foundation. It was agreed that the concert would be ‘presented by Winton Players’ as part of our charitable objects; and incidentally, perhaps to keep WP in the ‘public eye’.
I am sure that all of you will be aware of the Rosemary Foundation and the incredible work that this local charity does in providing 24/7 supportive palliative care - within their own homes  - to those suffering from cancer, or other life-threatening conditions. You can see further information on RF’s website at www.rosemary-foundation.org.uk.
RF depends solely on donations to fund its work. An indication of the value and appreciation of their attention to a family member is that an anonymous donor is to meet WP’s hire cost of  Petersfield Festival Hall for this concert.
Will you help to show support for the Rosemary Foundation and appreciation of the generous donor? You can help in two ways – first, by selling as many tickets as possible. Secondly, by offering to take on one of the FoH jobs. Laurie and Leslie Redstone are covering the Bar, teas and coffees. We are seeking FoH manager(s), ushers, programme issuers, ice cream sellers – unlike WP’s usual commitment – for one night only!!
Here are details for the Junior One Acts which this year will be directed by Emily Watts (panto Alice).
